The Speaker of the Lamu County Assembly, Hon. Azhar Ali Mbarak, has joined leaders from across the nation in mourning the passing of Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga, describing him as a visionary statesman whose legacy will forever shape Kenya’s democratic journey.
Hon. Azhar fondly recalled his personal encounter with the late Odinga, recounting how, in 2007, Raila identified and believed in him at a time when he was just 21 years old. It was under Raila’s mentorship and trust that he was appointed the ODM Youth Leader in Lamu and given the party’s ticket to vie for a councilor position — an opportunity that marked the beginning of his long and impactful political career.
“Raila Odinga saw potential in young leaders and gave many of us a chance to serve. His belief in inclusivity and empowerment of youth changed lives and shaped the leadership of an entire generation,” the Speaker said.
Hon. Azhar went on to win three consecutive terms under the ODM banner after devolution, a testament to the political ideals and grassroots strength inspired by Raila’s leadership.
He paid tribute to Odinga’s lifelong dedication to democracy, justice, and unity, describing him as “a true son of Kenya whose sacrifices and vision built the foundation for the freedoms and governance we enjoy today.”
“As Lamu and the nation bid farewell, we celebrate a man who gave everything for Kenya. His dream for a just, united, and prosperous nation must live on through all of us,” the Speaker added.
The Speaker extended heartfelt condolences to the Odinga family, the ODM fraternity, and all Kenyans mourning this great loss.
May the soul of Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga rest in eternal peace.
